If you are visiting Lisbon and want to live an authentic Portuguese experience at the table, Solar dos Presuntos is a must-see. More than a restaurant, this is a true symbol of Portuguese gastronomy, with almost 50 years of history and a loyal clientele that includes locals, tourists and celebrities.
A House with History
Solar dos Presuntos opened its doors in 1974, founded by Evaristo Cardoso, a native of Monção, in northern Portugal. Since then, it has become a reference when it comes to good Portuguese food - especially dishes from the Minho region, but also an impeccable selection of seafood and fresh fish.
The name "Hams" is not by chance: right at the entrance, you are greeted with walls decorated with hanging hams, and the atmosphere of the restaurant is cosy, traditional and full of personality. The caricatures on the walls are a registered trademark, with drawings of public figures who have already passed through there.
Our experience at Solar dos Presuntos: tradition, flavours and welcome
We had the opportunity to have dinner at Solar dos Presuntos and it was a truly special night. The table began with an irresistible couvert: sausages, cheeses, pata negra ham, olives and bread still hot. All accompanied by an excellent wine from Alentejo, Pêra-Grave Reserva 2014, which combined perfectly with the intense flavours of the starter.
The atmosphere was lively, with full tables and an attentive but relaxed service. It's the kind of place where you feel at home even though you're surrounded by tourists and locals. And there is no way not to notice the paintings and caricatures on the walls - a living gallery of the history of the restaurant and the people who passed through it.
The service was fast and cordial, and even with the house full, everything went at a pleasant pace. We were with the family - adults and children - and everyone felt well received. The friendliness of the employees was undoubtedly a highlight of the night.
What To Eat
The menu is extensive and filled with Portuguese classics. Some of the most requested dishes are:
Seafood Rice
Cod à Lagareiro
Octopus à Lagareiro
Minhota-style beef tenderloin
Shrimp Açorda
For those who appreciate seafood, Solar dos Presuntos has one of the best selections in Lisbon, with emphasis on razors, percebes, lavagantes and giant shrimps.
Desserts are also a separate chapter: conventual sweets, mousses, fruits and cheeses - all of the highest quality.
Average Price
Solar dos Presuntos is not one of the cheapest restaurants, but it is not one of the most expensive either. Considering the quality of the food, the service and the atmosphere, we think the price is fair.
Starter + Main Course + Dessert + Wine: between €40 and €60 per person.
There are simpler options that can be around €30, but the more elaborate dishes or shellfish pull the price up.
